How to Introduce Light into the World to Your Church
In order to introduce Light into the World: Hope for a New Day to your church, there are many ways of hosting workshops...
This is a good way of bringing kids and beginners together with older musicians, the church choir together with the contemporary group, a way to lure folks into church who might normally choose not to be there...
Bluegrass, following the 'Brother, Where art thou' movie, has taken a turn into the mainstream, and its harmonies and rhythms have worked their way into many peoples' stereos and hearts. This is a music simple to sing and simple to play, but has beautiful four-part harmony that reaches back to the Protestant composers of Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries.
This service can be played by your church organist on the piano, and sung by your church choir, as if it were any other contemporary liturgy. But if you want to do something to bring in young people, try hosting a workshop on bluegrass, and on the service.
Two easy ways of doing this are:
1) Hiring one or more bluegrass or folk musicians to work with your church musicians on techniques and tricks to make bluegrass easy... and perhaps even getting the musicians to play or sing with your church the first time you try it. Maybe you can make it a monthly or bi-weekly event that the musicians and congregation can look forward to and prepare for!
2) Contact Kent Gustavson to come to your church and work with your musicians on their technique, as well as tell them a little about the service, help them to lead it the first time... He will also work with anyone in the congregation who is interested in composing liturgies or other music, and can work with the church musician on strategies for 'recruiting' young people and good players from the community to bring life and energy to the service...
